Downsides to consider for each IUD:

  • Copper
    • Competes with zinc levels
    • Copper excess 
    • Heavier periods
    • Vagus nerve interference
    • Painful insertion 
  • Hormonal
    • Possible suppression of ovulation
    • Painful insertion
    • Prolonged bleeding
    • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
    • They can move / come out
    • Can cause ovarian cysts
    • Can damage the vaginal microbiome
    • Other possible side effects: hormonal acne, weight gain, anxiety, depression, hair loss

Pros of each IUD

  • Copper 
    • Ovulation may resume
    • Emergency contraception before ovulation occurs
  • Hormonal
    • Lighter periods
