I need to tell you something pretty crazy. There was a time when my libido was non-existent. Truthfully, the thought of sex was incredibly unappealing and I thought this was just “normal.” In reality, my lack of sex drive (aka low libido) was due to the hormonal birth control pill that I had been taking for years.

Women’s sexual wellness and desire is a topic that I am very passionate about as it is a huge part of our divine femininity that has so much stigma around it. *Insert a big eye roll as this is a recurring theme in today’s world.
You probably remember your high school Sex Ed class going something like this: A woman and a man have sex, the man will ejaculate, and if she is not on hormonal contraceptive and/or he is not wearing a condom, she will get pregnant and perhaps an STl. In addition to the lack of sexual education, we see in mainstream media - movies, TV shows, etc. - male-focused sexual pleasure. You know what I am referring to, where the woman is blissfully moaning after being penetrated by her male partner for what seems to be an entire 60 seconds. This leaves most of us women confused as heck as to why the sex portrayed in the movies doesn’t feel as incredible in real life.
To make matters even worse, most women are prescribed hormonal contraceptives, specifically the pill, which shuts off ovulation and our body’s natural hormone production, which I believe to be the true libido hijacker. With low amounts of our sexy, feel-good hormones estrogen and testosterone, and low amounts of our calming hormone progesterone, it’s no wonder why our sex drive plummets.
The natural shifts in hormones that a menstruator experiences during her cycle is her SUPERPOWER! These shifts allow her to tap into different moods, energies, and creative flows throughout her cycle. When testosterone and estrogen levels peak during the ovulatory phase of the menstrual cycle, we feel peaks in our sexual desires and it is SO fun.
